Preston has won one point in his first 6 outings. He actually won the point the first time he was shown. He was still young and is shy. Once he gets a little more acclimated he will advance quickly. At 7 months the judge who gave him his first point told Skip "you have a beautiful puppy". This past show was in Palm Springs and the competition was strong. Many of the best handlers were there with their best dogs. And, while Preston did not win a point, his judge also took time to comment on him. He told Skip "he will be a great dog once you get him to behave". Preston was only 10 months old, but looked older since he is long. He is being judged with dogs 2-3 years old. These dogs are handled by professional handlers, have their full adult coats and a year and a half experience on him. He is also hampered by his handler, Skip, who has only been showing for a few months. In spite of all this he is doing well. As soon as he overcomes his shyness and learns to take all the noise and activity in stride he will come into his own.
Most people feel they are donating their entry fees during the puppy stage until the dog gets enough experience, so we enjoy showing him and are very proud that he has his first point already. I think another quarter and Preston will begin to advance quickly.
Reluctantly we decided to stop showing Preston. He simply does not enjoy it as Whiskers does. We will be showing his son Ruffy soon.
