Gunny tested AFFECTED for PRA. This means he has two genes for the disease and will develop it during his lifetime. Although this is a big disappointment it is not the end of the world (RESPONSIBLE breeding is NOT to discard all non clear dogs. See the article DON'T THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATH WATER: http://www.rugerdachshunds.com/babybathwater.html.). What it does mean is we will breed Gunny to a clear female. The puppies from that litter will all be CARRIER (one good gene and one bad). None of these puppies will ever develop the disease and will be sold as pet only. We will likely keep one of the carrier puppies, we really like, and breed him/her to a clear mate. Half of that litter will be carrier and sold as pet, the other half will be clear and we will keep one of those for long term breeding. Gunny will yet produce a clear offspring with all of his other wonderful characteristics. This is a long process and takes two generations and more testing but is the only way to eradicate this widespread disease.
DASH OF GUNNERY SERGEANT USMC MWBR, we just call him "Gunny". Gunny comes to us from Cedar Hills Kennel, thank you Alberta. At fourteen weeks Gunny looks nice. He is our first Brindle and we look forward to producing some nice quality Brindle wires from him by breeding him to Whiskers' daughters Reggae and Chipper (both are PRA clear). PEDIGREE
