5 Week Pictures

5 Week Pictures. This is the hardest article I have ever had to write. NO, THEY ARE NOT CREAMS!!! Yes Blondie's Chinchilla cream gene is lightening them up but they are clearly BRINDLE. It is not uncommon for young English Creams to appear brindle at birth but these puppies are not losing their black hair, it is being accented all the more by the cream undercoat. A single Chinchilla gene for cream will "influence" the red color but fail to change it completely to cream and will have no effect on the black. Not only that, but a couple of the puppies are wire! The only Brindle we have is Gunny. So this means Gunny is the sire. We are confirming this with DNA kits we have already ordered for Gunny, Ruffy and Butch. If Ruffy is the father of even one of these it would be Butch but even that is unlikely. It is possible to have two sires of a single litter. HOW DID IT HAPPEN?? Or more correctly WHEN? Blondie was isolated with Ruffy for 3 weeks. She must have come in heat before the isolation and hooked up with Gunny without our knowledge. By the time she was put in with Ruffy she was already pregnant.

This pairing is particularly bad since Gunny is Affected for PRA and Blondie is carrier. That means at least 2 or maybe 3 of these puppies could be affected, something we swore we would never create. We will have all the puppies DNA tested for PRA and post the results. Affected puppies will be sold for $200 and only to understanding homes who know the dogs are likely to develop partial to full vision loss at some point. PRA is late onset and it may be 10 years and it is POSSIBLE to be affected and never have symptoms, but it is unlikely.

We sincerely regret this circumstance and apologize to you all that we have let you down. To better understand what and why this happened I will explain. Roberta and I have argued about how to kennel the dogs from the beginning. I am logical and she is emotional. I wanted to have a kennel dedicated to each male and his "family' of females. Put Ruffy in with Angelique, Blondie and Candy and so forth for each male. The problem is Roberta likes them to run in the back yard and they all get to come in the house from time to time. Seh also likes to rotate all the dogs through all of the kennels since each kennel is different and has a different size yard. So she thought she could run them together as a pack and just pull the girls out when they came into heat. She relied on the male attention to alert her and the natural tendency of the female to reject the male for the first 10 days until she was "standing". This is kind of like the rhythm method of birth control. Clearly it sounds good but has limitations. Blondie must have come into heat and hooked up with Gunny while running as a pack and Roberta did not notice.

Subsequently we have made some changes in our kennel procedures. We are now using the "family" approach. No male is ever with a femal he is not intended to be bred to. Each boy has a kennel with his name on it. The names of all the girls he is promised to are on it as well. If he is removed to come in the house for the night, the girls stay in the kennel. We have two other areas. One for girls who are being rested and one for pregnant girls. No boys go into either area. If a dog is left alone in a kennel because the others are in the house or a sequestered area and they have no one to play with it just has to be that way until someone is returned. The attempt to always give each dog someone to play with is the emotion which led to our troubles. It is surprising how often good intentions can lead to bad results.

Butch looks pretty light here but I believe he is a wire and will be a light red or wheaton.

4 Week Pictures

4 Week Pictures. Actually we are still darker than these pictures show, Skip added brighter lighteing and it reflects off of our cream undercoat and we look even lighter. But look how much we have changed since last week. Much of the dark hair is gone.

Look at our wonderful fat little feet and wavy ears. Just like dad, we are really starting to get cute at 4 weeks.

Banty has gained very quickly. He is catching his siblings in size and continues to lighten. He is easily the second lightest at this point.

TIGER BB the only girl is also medium size and a bit lighter. I lightened a bunch this week and as you can see, I like to explore.

Brazzo is still the darkest but look at those patterens and the contrasts. He will probably retain the most shading but will lose all the balck on his head and face.

Butch is still the lightest and getting lighter every day. Butch will probably end up with only a touch of shading on his ears.

3 Week Pictures

3 Week Pictures. Do you know how to tell when a puppy's ears are open? They BARK. It is pretty cute. They experiment with their voice because they can now recognize sounds.

For our own future reference, the puppies all looked BRINDLE at birth except Butch. The Black appeared in lines and splotches. The black is alreadys strating to dissapear but the puppies are still quite dark at 3 weeks. I would expect small lines of cream to start showing up next week, giving the puppies a kind of striped appearance but only time will tell.

Banty has gained very quickly. Still the smallest, it is no longer so noticible. Banty really lightened up since last week.

Brazzo the darkest at birth replaces Butch as the biggest boy although the difference is slight. Watch Brazzo as he lightens up to match his light brother Butch below. Both will be lighter than Butch is now.

Butch is still the lightest and the one who lets us know for sure Gunny didn't escape from a 5 foot kennel and make a midnight call on Blondie.

2 Week Pictures

2 Week Pictures. We are FAST!! We have our eyes and ears open already!! For those of you who are not familiar with English Creams, they are born dark then lighten up. We look a whole lot less like Brindles than we did a week ago!! I had Roberta trying to figure out how Gunny could have gotten to Blondie. lol. The photos may not show the change so dramatically as the camera adds red. Note the background this week is pure white but it looks cream.

Banty because he is the smallest, boy. He has gained very quickly. Still the smallest, it is no longer noticible. Banty really lightened up since last week.

1 Week Pictures

1 Week Pictures. All are healthy and doing fine. Blondie is a good mom. For those of you who are not familiar with English Creams, they are born dark then lighten up. These puppies will all be shaded creams with varying amounts of shading. Any red you see is added by the camera. To begin with one is much lighter then the others. All this means is one would have had less shading at bith. most of the black hair will fall out and the cream will come through.. When they are grown it is not likely you will be able to tell who was the light one at birth. They will all be light. Watch as they lighten.

Banty because he is the smallest, boy. He will gain ground quickly. When a dog is bred they are bred multiple times over a 10 day period. When the oldest puppy is ready to come out they all do. Banty is likely a week younger than Butch who is the biggest, but he will catch up.

Newborn Litter

Blondie and Ruffy Litter Whelped 02/11/2010. 5 Shaded English Creams. Note all English Creams are born dark, gray or mouse brown, the cream comes out as they grow.
These 5 puppies will look just like mom and dad. Commonly called "creams" or "English Creams" they are actually Shaded English Creams. They will all have a little bit of black
shading on their ears and possibly on thier tails. This is as opposed to BooBoo who also has the EE gene series and has not a single black hair (no shading). A "clear red" dog becomes a "clear cream"
dog when it has two Chinchilla genes. A "shaded red" becomes a "shaded cream"dog when it has two Chinchilla genes. Blondie is a Shaded Englsih Cream as you can see a little black shading on her ears.

** Note: Other dogs loosely called "creams" include the "American Creams". "American Creams" are born light, have no Chinchilla gene. They have a "D" dilute gene which lightens the
red hair to cream. This cream darkens as the puppies get older. This gene also bleaches the black in the dog. These "creams" have white toenails and can have blothchy coloerd noses.
They turn more of a tan color as they mature. English Creams have Black nose and nails. White nails adn blotchy nose colors are a fault in creams. It is not good to mix the two processes.
To see an example of a mixed preocess dog you can look at "Butter" under our Dash of Fame. He is both cream processes AND piebald (white). He was born platinum (our log picture) but
turned tan as he grew up. He had white nails. Butter was our first dog. He was never bred. He is a sweet dog and a beautiful puppy but not what we needed for our breeding program.

I don't need to tell you how beautiful Blondie is. Just check out those ears!!! And I can tell you she has the personality to match. This was an unexpected litter which would never have been done intentionally since Gunny's PRA status is affected and Blondie's is carrier. Still there is always a silver lining. There were some extraordinary long hiared brindles with that English Cream influence. You won't find wires with long ears like this litter has.

Gunny is shy and passive and Blondie is very dominant. These puppies will be a great blend of courage with self control.

Blondie is sweet and active yet she knows how to settle down when it is time to go to sleep. She simply has no personality flaws at all, unless you count licking my face at 4:30 sharp every morning when it is time to get up. She and Gunny both have long ears and fat feet.

There are no guarantees and individual puppies can vary greatly but we expect their puppies to be MEDIUM ACTIVE . Active puppies are almost always in motion. These two dogs also compliment each other physically. Both dogs have a deep chest and long rib cage for great back support. We try very hard to give each owner a realistic expectation of the puppy they adopt. We do not have any mean or ill tempered dogs. We will not tolerate a trouble maker and certainly will not include it in our breeding program, no matter what the pedigree. Some bad or aggressive behavior is learned and some inherited, we try to start you with the best temperament possible to give you that head start.
